So, here is your guide to the best student-friendly bars and restaurants in and around the Royal Docks.

The Top Royal Docks Nightlife Venues
The Underground Bar
The heart of campus life at the University of East London, The Underground Bar is a venue for all seasons. By day, it is a great place to unwind with a drink while you study or catch up on group projects, but by night, it becomes a vibrant bar space.
It offers exceptionally low drink prices, which are among the cheapest in the Royal Docks area. The space feels relaxed and friendly, regularly hosting themed club nights, pub quizzes, and social events. Access is strictly for students, so remember to carry your university ID alongside a valid photo ID for entry.
The Oiler Bar
If you want to experience East London maritime heritage, this permanently moored venue sits at Royal Victoria Beach. The bar is a converted Royal Navy refuelling barge. It functions as a floating beer garden with panoramic views of the water and the Canary Wharf skyline.
Prices remain highly competitive compared to central London bars. The setting feels casual, alternative, and peaceful. It provides a great outdoor terrace for sunny afternoons, alongside a cosy, enclosed lounge space below deck for cooler weather.
The Fox, ExCel
Operating out of a converted tobacco warehouse near the ExCeL exhibition centre, The Fox works well when you travel with a large crowd. It is a traditional warehouse pub with bare brick walls and iron beams, making it a fun destination for society socials.
The expansive layout means you can usually find a table without booking in advance. The kitchen serves filling, classic pub food alongside standard pints at great value. The indoor space features large screens, creating an excellent spot to watch live sports fixtures with friends.
Where are the Best Restaurants?
Heroica Lounge
This Italian pizzeria operates out of a bright red, 30-year-old double-decker London bus. You can find it parked right at the water’s edge at Western Gateway, near the Good Hotel and the Royal Victoria DLR station.
The kitchen serves authentic wood-fired pizzas and cocktails at fair midweek prices. The environment feels playful and distinct. You can climb up to the top deck to eat your meal or use the dockside seating area during clear weather.
Yi-Ban
Perched on the upper floor of the London Regatta Centre, Yi-Ban sits right over the water of the Royal Albert Dock. It offers a clear view across the water, where you can watch planes take off from nearby London City Airport.
The restaurant serves traditional dim sum lunches that become highly cost-effective when you split the bill across a larger group of flatmates. The bright, minimalist dining room makes an afternoon meal feel special without requiring a massive budget.
Nakhon Thai Restaurant
Located on the western edge of the Royal Victoria Dock, Nakhon Thai features a traditional dining room alongside a tropical-themed cocktail space. It provides an authentic option for a meal out without requiring a trip into central London.
The menu features great mid-week lunch deals on classic Thai curries, stir-fries, and noodle dishes. The cocktail menu remains student-friendly, making it a useful venue for celebrating academic milestones or birthday dinners.
The Windjammer
Situated slightly further down the riverfront within the modern Royal Wharf development, this spacious gastropub offers a quiet escape from the immediate campus environment. It features a sun-drenched outdoor terrace overlooking the Thames.
The bar offers an affordable mid-week fixed-price menu alongside traditional Sunday roasts. The layout includes an elevated mezzanine seating area, providing a contemporary, comfortable spot to break up your weekly study routine.
