Matchday in Cardiff: Enjoying Live Sport as a Student

Floodlights on a cold evening, a crowd drawing its breath before kick-off, the clatter of sticks on the ice. Cardiff gives students some great sports to follow across a range of stadiums, with a season that stretches through the winter.

Matchday in Cardiff: Enjoying Live Sport as a Student

Where Can You Watch Football?

At Cardiff City Stadium, where Cardiff City play in the Sky Bet Championship.

Ninian Park station is about five minutes’ walk from the stadium, with Grangetown station about ten minutes. On match days, Cardiff Bus route 95 leaves Wood Street in the city centre every 15 minutes from two hours before kick-off, and normal fares and Cardiff Bus tickets apply. Gates open 90 minutes before kick-off, and Boxing Day brings Millwall to the stadium.

The matchday ticket office opens at 10 am and closes at half-time. It prefers card payment, so queues are possible; arriving early makes entry easier.

Where Does Wales Play Its Rugby?

At the Principality Stadium on Westgate Street, the national stadium of Wales and home to every Wales home international. It opened in 1999, holds 73,931 and closes its retractable roof when the weather turns.

The autumn brings Japan on Saturday 7th November, New Zealand on 14th November and Australia on 21st November. The 2027 Six Nations follows, with Ireland visiting on Saturday 20th February and England on 6th March. Adult tickets for the autumn matches are still available, and the Welsh Rugby Union sells dedicated student tickets in the upper tier. Tickets are sold through my.wru.wales, so check there for availability.

Between matches, a stadium tour costs £16.50 for students, though match and event days need checking.

Where Does Club Rugby Take Over the City?

On Westgate Street, at Cardiff Arms Park, home of Cardiff Rugby in the United Rugby Championship. The club sells Young Adult tickets for ages 18 to 25 and asks students to show proof of education with a valid NUS card.

November passes without a home league fixture. The next home match is against Ulster on Saturday 5th December at 3 pm, and tickets are sold online through the club’s ticketing site.

Is Ice Hockey Worth a Winter Evening?

Yes, and the price makes it an easy choice. Cardiff Fire play in the National Ice Hockey League’s South Division 1 at Vindico Arena in Cardiff Bay, with face-off at 7 pm on Saturdays and 6:45 pm on Sundays. Doors open about 45 minutes before, and a game lasts about two hours and 15 minutes.

General admission is £5 for ages 16 to 21 and £7 for ages 22 to 59, with premium seating at £7 and £10. The club has no separate student category, so students aged 22 and over pay the adult price. Booking online avoids queues, and food is available in the ground-floor café and the first-floor bar.

Cardiff Bus service 9 links the city centre to the arena. By train, take a Barry or Bridgend service from Cardiff Central to Cogan, then walk ten minutes across the Pont-y-Werin footbridge.

Bonus Tips

  • A Cardiff Fire ticket carries a £1.50 arena booking fee, so a £5 youth seat comes to £6.50. Raffle tickets and Chuck-A-Puck games inside cost £1 each.
  • Choose a Welsh rugby club when you buy a Wales ticket, and it receives a £2 contribution.
  • Two Welsh derbies at Cardiff Arms Park are worth marking early: Dragons on Saturday 19th December at 3 pm and Ospreys on Saturday 2nd January at 5:30 pm.
