University of Nottingham

Just a little way outside of the city centre the University of Nottingham is located. There are regular bus services that run from the luxury student apartments in Nottingham out to the university. It is highly rated within the world of academia and is regularly found within the top 100 universities in world rankings. Over 43,000 students study at the University of Nottingham, with students arriving from all over the UK and the world – the university actually has two campuses internationally, in Malaysia and China.

The SU offers a large number of groups, clubs, and societies to take advantage of, and is a great tool for representation of student issues throughout campus and the city. You can find support from the students’ union for welfare issues, educational issues, as well as support in finding part-time work alongside studies, work placements, and support to find employment post-graduation. The university has always been innovative and open-minded, opening the first new vet school in over 50-years in the UK back in 2006, and being awarded the title of top sports university in the UK for 2019.

Nottingham Trent University

The other big university close to your luxury student accommodation in Nottingham is Nottingham Trent University. This is within waking distance of our student apartments, and also easily reached via public transport. It is another popular UK university, home to over 26,000 students in total, and it is consistently ranked as a gold standard for teaching and within the top 15 of university polls for student satisfaction.

The Students’ Union is home to a 2,400 capacity venue and has multiple attractions and events within it. This includes high-spec sound and lighting equipment, three bars, a fitness suite, large climbing wall, and a large multi-purpose sports hall. Students also have access to over 160 clubs, groups and societies to explore and enjoy, as well as multiple opportunities for part-time work within the SU itself, including the magazine and radio.

Nottingham Language Academy

Nottingham Language Academy is a small, independent language school close to your new luxury student accommodation in Nottingham. It is the perfect location for those students looking to attend flexible language courses with a view to working overseas in another language, or for job or educational applications.

Where To Eat

It is said that Nottingham is home to more pubs, bars, and restaurants per square mile than any other city in the UK. From your base at our luxury student accommodation you’ll have your pick of fine dining restaurants, affordable but tasty cafés, student hangouts for a lite bite to eat, and great takeaways. Whatever type of food it is that you like, you are bound to find it in Nottingham, and it is certainly a city where you can broaden your horizons and try out some new cuisine that you have wanted to for a while.

Student Hangouts

Some of the best student hangouts for food include Dad’s Kitchen on Alfreton Road which is an amazing Caribbean takeaway, Crocus Café on Church Square for dead friendly service from the staff and really affordable cheap eats that make it a great place for students to find tasty grub during the day.

If you are a lover of curry and are looking for a great place to go for some tasty Indian food with your new friends, look no further than Mogul-E-Azam on Goldsmith Street, where they are home to some incredible tasty Indian dishes at a pretty reasonable price (you should also keep an eye out for their student discount and promotions). Similarly, Mayfair on Mansfield Road is a great place to head if you want to have some Chinese food, as it is really cheap and allows you to bring your own booze to keep the costs down.

Fine Dining

It isn’t always about finding something cheap to eat though is it? If you are going on a date and want to impress, or your parents are visiting and you want to make the most of someone else paying for a change, why not head on over to Sir John Borlase Warren on Ilkeston Road, which is known for a relaxed atmosphere and fantastic steaks. The Library on Wollaton Road is a great example of international cuisine in tapas-style, whilst The Walk Bridlesmith is a great daytime place to impress the ‘rents’ with top quality tea and cake (it also does a great range of craft beers, great burgers, and some astounding chicken parmo!) Lee Rosy’s on Broad Street is another fantastic specialist tea place (with over 100 types of tea for sale), and Edin’s Deli Café on Broad Street is another great tapas-style restaurant offering high quality dishes from around the world.

Restaurants

The Cornerhouse is home to a fine range of brand name restaurants that you know and love, including Bella Italia, Wagamama, Turtle Bay, and TGI Fridays, and is also home to a range of bars and a big cinema. It’s certainly a great place to go for a fun night out with friends, or on a date with someone new. Annie’s Burger Shack is an institution in this city, offering an extensive burger range and 10% off food with a student card Monday to Friday (12pm-5pm).

Nights Out

Nottingham is a safe city for a night out, awarded Purple Flag status on a consistent basis. There is so much to explore on a night out in Nottingham, whether you are looking for a quiet pint in a traditional pub setting, a student night in a bar or club, live comedy, or live music.

Live Entertainment

If you love live music then Nottingham is the perfect place for you to live. Starting from your new home in the luxury surroundings of our student accommodation in Nottingham, you are within striking distance of some of the finest live music venues in the country, ranging from small local venues showcasing local talent and open mic nights, through to big venues where touring national and international bands visit.

Motorpoint Arena is the place to go to see all of the big name touring acts from the UK and abroad, whilst Rock City is the alternative venue for indie bands, and big name bands and artists who like to play slightly smaller and more intimate venues. The Bodega Social Club is one of the more gritty venues where you can see bands just before they hit the big time, whilst the Glee Club is great for similar indie folk bands, quieter music (and it’s also a fantastic live comedy venue too). Rescue Rooms is another great live music venue, bar and host of many club nights, Spanky Van Dykes is the place to be for cool live music of all genre, whilst Jam Café offers plenty of open mic nights and good vibes. If you want something a little more sophisticated then the Royal Concert Hall is a great place to take the parents when they are visiting. It is home to international artists, pop, rock, classical music, and musical theatre.

Ocean

For a big student night out in town look no further than Ocean. There are multiple themed student nights here, as well as nights for students from each university specifically (for example Wednesday night is the Ocean night for Nottingham Trent students). After some pre-drinks and a mini pub crawl around town Ocean is definitely the place you want to end up on a night out in Nottingham!

Clubs

We mentioned Rock City as a gig venue but it is so much more than that. Every Wednesday is a Nottingham University student club night, and Thursday nights there is a drinks promotion as part of ‘Tuned’ night, with access to three rooms with different music playing in each room. Similarly the Rescue Rooms has a joint club night with Stealth on a Saturday night, whilst Climax at the Nottingham Trent SU is a fantastic club night on a Saturday. The largest club in Nottingham is PRYZM and it has become the pinnacle of club nights in the city, with six big rooms, all with different themes, cheap drinks, and a great night out every single time!

Staying Fit And Active

Being awarded the title of Sports University of 2019 was a culmination of all the hard work that has been put into the sports facilities at the University of Nottingham, and it certainly shines through. Whether you are looking for a sports club or team to join just to keep fit, to make new friends and to have a hobby where you have fun, or you wish to compete at an elite level, you’ll find everything you need at the university.

Sport Facilities

Both of the universities offer inspiring and innovative sporting facilities and pursuits for students, with high numbers of sports clubs and societies to pick from. There are more sports clubs at the University of Nottingham than at any other university in the UK, and the state-of-the-art Sports Village is an incredible facility that helps to breed elite sportspeople for all types of sports, and to compete not only at University League level, but also to compete at a professional standard within each sport, or at Commonwealth and Olympic level.

If you are looking for some adrenaline –fuelled sports adventure the National Water Sports Centre is a great shout, whereas the National Ice Centre is a great place to learn how to ice skate (as well as watching competitive speed skating and figure skating). Nottingham will always be linked to high-level ice skating, and has links to Olympic Gold Medal winning pair Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean (who won Gold in Sarajevo in 1984). The NIC is also home to the Nottingham Panthers ice hockey team and one of the oldest recreational ice hockey teams in the UK, the Nottingham North Stars.

Other Sport Facilities

There are also plenty of cycle trails in and around Nottingham, whether you are a novice or a seasoned cyclist. If you are into tennis Nottingham Tennis Centre provides plenty of pay-and-play solutions and high-level tournaments. For those runners looking to get that competitive edge, the Robin Hood Half and Full Marathon takes place every year and raised plenty of money for good causes along the way.

Spectating

For spectator sports though there is also plenty to see and experience in Nottingham, and your luxury student accommodation is in the perfect location to access top-level sport. Twice European Champions Nottingham Forest play at the City Ground in the Championship, whilst Notts County play at Meadow Lane in the National League and are regarded as the oldest professional football club in the entire world. Trent Bridge is home of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club and is also a host of major international test cricket, Twenty20 Cup finals and One Day international matches.

Where To Shop

Moving into your new luxury student accommodation in Nottingham you’ll want to find your bearings as soon as possible and find out where the local supermarkets are and the local shops. We all have a hankering for home at times, and you’ll easily find the big high street stores and famous brand names that you know and love. Shopping Centres

There are two pretty large shopping centres in the city – Intu Broadmarsh and Intu Victoria Centre. The Victoria Centre on Mansfield Road is a great place to go for all of your high street needs. You’ll find John Lewis and a whole host of other high street brands and stores here, as well as restaurants and cafés to enjoy a lite-bite to eat and a drink as a little break from shopping. Victoria Centre Market (upstairs) is a great local market where you can find local produce in the form of fabrics, clothing, jewellery, arts and crafts, but also great fruit and veg for a reasonable price. This is excellent when it comes to shopping for food on a student budget and is a great stop to stock up your new luxury Nottingham student home.

Independent Stores

There is a lot more to Nottingham than just the big name stores and large shopping centres though. There are plenty of quirky independent shops and vintage boutiques for clothing, crafts, gifts, and records throughout the city for you to explore. Fopp on Queen Street is a vinyl dream, with collections of old and new records.

Tokenhouse on Bridlesmith Gate on the other and is home to a treasure trove of trinkets and gifts, whereas Wild on Broad Street offers an interesting range of American-style clothing and retro gear. Page 45 is a great place to go if you are looking for comics and quality graphic novels, whereas Backlash on Norfolk Place is another fantastic place for vintage clothing and authentic accessories from many different eras. Another interesting places to shop include The Bead Shop on Market Street where you can create your own jewellery, rather than just buy it.

There are a few fantastic areas that are perfect to explore the vibrant independent retail environment in Nottingham, all within walking distance of your luxury student accommodation. Look at Hockley, Flying Horse Walk, Lance Market, Derby Road, and Cobden Chambers to find some quirky boutiques and independent gems.

Events And Attractions

It’s no surprise to hear that for such a vibrant city as Nottingham that there are plenty of events and attractions to visit and experience in your time living at our luxury Nottingham student accommodation. Nottingham is also a place that has a rich tradition of live comedy, and is home to some brilliant live comedy venues that will get you belly laughing for hours at a time, such as The Glee Club, Jongleurs, and Just the Tonic. They are all places where you can expect to see great up-and-coming talent alongside touring comedic acts. Theatre Royal and the Nottingham Playhouse are both great examples of theatre, live music, and comedy, whilst amateur plays can be seen at the Lace Market Theatre.

Robin Hood

You’ll see the name Robin Hood wherever you go in Nottingham, and it is something you’ll quickly learn to love and embrace as a student living in the city. The legendary outlaw has his name on so many different aspects of the city and The Robin Hood Tour is a fantastic way to learn more about the legend and the myths surrounding the figure, but is also a fantastic way to get to know the city a little better when you first move here. Sherwood Forest is just outside the city and is a major regional tourist attraction, and The Robin Hood Festival celebrates medieval times each year, with music, entertainment, food and drink from the time.

Parks

For a pleasant outdoor experience there is plenty of lush green spaces in and around Nottingham. Arboretum Park is a fantastic place to sit down and relax in nature after a hard shift of work in the university library. Just on the outskirts is the Peak District National Park and the legendary Sherwood Forest provide some fantastic locations to explore hiking trails, to cycle, and to run, and to just get away into nature for a while and blow away the cobwebs. Another stunning location to visit is Wollaton Hall (which was used as the location for Wayne Manor in the Dark Knight Rises Batman Film).

Festivals

Nottingham is also home to many festivals and events each year, with Dot-to-Dot Festival highly regarded as one of the best city music festivals in the UK, where good bands can be seen playing in relatively small, and unusual venues throughout the city that might not usually be used for music or live performances of any kind. The Splendour Festival on the other hand is a great big outdoor festival that plays hosts to all sorts of entertainment, including bands of all sizes, from local unsigned bands to large bands nationally-recognised.

Special mention must go to a few other festivals in Nottingham, including the D. H. Lawrence Festival, Nottingham Poetry Festival, and Mayhem (which is a horror and cult film festival bringing the best and the weirdest of the horror film genre to the city).
