Royal Holloway, University Of London

Egham is home to only one university – Royal Holloway, University of London, and it does not disappoint. 

This Surrey-based uni is extremely stunning on the eye, especially considering it’s home to the iconic Founders Building. This building in particular is so special that it’s argued to be one of the most spectacular university buildings in the world! How cool is that?

Spread over 135 acres of greenery, the campus is exceptional, and the teaching that takes place here is unmatched. It’s ranked in the top 25 universities in the UK, so really, why wouldn’t you want to experience your uni life here? Facilities

It was founded by two social reformers whose vision still lives on to this day. As one of the UK’s leading research universities, Royal Holloway is home to some of the best educational sites, including the sciences, arts, business, economics and law. 

What’s even more special about this uni is the location. You’re blessed with the beautiful, scenic greenery, yet in just a short 40-minute train ride, you could be right in the heart of central London.

When it comes to eating out in Egham, you are spoilt for choice. It is home to an array of restaurants and cafes for you to indulge in as an after-university treat. With a wide range of cuisines available, you might find it difficult to decide where to go to suit everyone’s taste buds. We have found some of the top spots in Egham for you to visit while staying in our Prestige student accommodation.

Villa Rosa (The Precinct, High Street)

A quaint Italian restaurant located at The Precinct on Egham’s bustling High Street, Villa Rosa is well worth a visit. Expect a super tasty meal and some deliciously refreshing drinks, as this eatery is renowned for using exceptionally high-quality ingredients. For pasta lovers, why not choose the ravioli filled with ricotta cheese and spinach in a rich tomato sauce? Or, if you are more of a pizza person, choose the signature Villa Rosa pizza, featuring a freshly made, hand-stretched dough base topped with succulent chicken, mozzarella, tomato, and mushrooms.

Eat Thai (67 High Street)

On the other end of the spectrum lies Eat Thai, an authentic Thai restaurant serving only the best dishes traditional Thai cuisine can offer. With a wonderful variety of vegetarian, vegan-friendly, and gluten-free options to choose from, all dietary needs are perfectly catered for here, meaning you can invite all your university pals along to dine in.

Caffe Gondola (168 High Street)

For a more laidback and relaxed environment, Caffe Gondola is well worth a visit. Just a short walk from our student accommodation in Egham, you are bound to pop in more than just once during your time at university. The open kitchen boasts an authentic wood-fired pizza oven, and the menu offers a genuine Italian experience with freshly made pasta and pizza. Warm, welcoming, and consistently well-reviewed by locals and students alike.

Nights Out

If you are looking for a vibrant night out, then you have come to the right place, as Egham may be small but it is extremely lively when the evening gets going. From the student union to lively pubs and cocktail bars, there is something for everyone here.

RHSU

As the student union for Royal Holloway, University of London, RHSU is one of the best places to go for a night out in Egham. With two nightclubs (the Union Venue and Medicine), a campus pub (The Packhorse), and a bar and restaurant (Tommy’s Kitchen), there is plenty of choice across the campus. RHSU hosts weekly club nights, society performances, themed parties, and a packed Freshers programme to kick off the year in style.

The Packhorse

A much-loved campus pub run by RHSU and open seven days a week, The Packhorse is a must-visit for students. With live sport on six TVs, weekly club nights including Big Bears Wednesday with free entry, food from a proper kitchen, and a consistently lively atmosphere, it is the beating heart of campus social life. Whether you are popping in for pre-drinks or staying for the night, you will be well catered for.

Medicine

Medicine is RHSU’s second major nightclub venue, with an indoor bar and a spacious beer garden that is perfect for drinks in the warmer months. A great option for a bigger night out on campus.

Bar 163

Outside of the student union, Bar 163 is a relaxed cocktail bar close to your Egham student accommodation. It offers a huge selection of cocktails, wines, and draught beers. A great option for a quieter evening with friends.

Love Shopping?

Who does not love shopping? Especially after a busy day at uni, a little retail therapy never goes amiss. If you are looking to head out of your Egham student accommodation into the town centre, make sure you check out what is on offer. From high street stores to quaint coffee shops, you will find everything you need here.

Egham’s High Street

This pedestrianised area is open daily and offers an array of shops to discover. Running out of essentials? You can pop into Superdrug on the High Street to top up on everything you need. Costa and Greggs are also nearby for a quick bite or a coffee on the go.

Elmsleigh Shopping Centre

Just a five-minute train ride from Egham to Staines-upon-Thames, the Elmsleigh Shopping Centre is a well-occupied retail destination with a strong mix of high street names. Anchor stores include Primark, H&M, River Island, Matalan, Sports Direct, and New Look, alongside a Waterstones that recently relocated from the High Street into a newly fitted unit opposite Primark. A street market also operates outside the centre on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Remember to always keep an eye out for sites such as UNiDAYS for student discounts in any of these stores. Making the most of this benefit is something all students recommend, because once you leave you will be begging for it back!
