Sheffield also known as the Steel City, is home to two outstanding universities, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. As such it has become a popular destination for students from all over the UK and overseas. It is now home to over 60,000 students, many of whom, decide to stay on after finishing their studies, as it is a city that is home to many activities for young people to enjoy, from sports and music to arts, culture and history.

The University of Sheffield

Established in 1828, the University of Sheffield is home to over 30,000 students from 150 countries, meaning there’s a diverse range of people to meet and memories to make whilst studying here. The university is ranked in the world’s top 100 universities by the QS World University Rankings and is also one of the best research universities in the UK. Known for its world-class research, with six Nobel Prize winners, the university has a strong focus on developing students to their fullest potential as they progress through their studies and into their careers.

With an expansive campus and plenty of student support, the University of Sheffield provides an environment that is both stimulating and supportive for students. The University also boasts a vibrant cultural and social life, with a wide range of clubs, societies and other activities which allow students to make the most of their time at the University. Sheffield Hallam University

Sheffield Hallam University is located within Sheffield City Centre and has over 32,000 students and 4,000 staff members, making it one of the largest universities in the UK. Established in 1843 as the Sheffield School of Design, Sheffield Hallam University is renowned for its research and academic excellence. The university has five faculties, including the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, the Faculty of Arts, Computing, Engineering and Sciences, the Faculty of Development and Society, and the Faculty of Education, Arts and Humanities.

Sheffield Hallam University also has world-class research and teaching facilities, such as the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research, and the Centre for Sport, Exercise and Life Sciences. Whilst staying in our Sheffield Hallam student accommodation, you’ll be within easy access of campus so you can study and thrive alongside the 30,000 other students.

University of Sheffield International College

The University of Sheffield International College (USIC) offers world-class education to students from around the world. It has a diverse range of courses delivered in partnership with the University of Sheffield. The college is committed to providing an excellent learning environment and to supporting the personal and academic development of each student. Whether it be an undergraduate course or a postgraduate course, this higher education college close by to our Sheffield student properties offers tuition in language, study skills and subject preparation for those coming from abroad to study in The Steel City.

City Centre Cuisine

There are plenty of cost-efficient, student friendly restaurants and eateries in the city, which you would expect from a city with so many students. The city centre is a vibrant, exciting area to explore, full of diverse independent eateries, cafes and restaurants, all located within the heart of Sheffield. From traditional English pub grub to international flavours and vegan dishes, we are sure you’ll find something to tingle your taste buds without having to splash the cash from your student loan.

Ecclesall Road

One of the most popular spots for students is Ecclesall Road, which has a great selection of shops, cute cafes and vibrant cocktail spots, to delicious eateries, friendly shops and pubs. Ecclesall Road really has it all. With a three mile stretch of different businesses, if you’re after somewhere nice to eat out and enjoy a few tipples with your friends, don’t shy away from this place.

There’s the likes of Lost & Found Sheffield which offers all day dining and a huge cocktail menu, as well as a secret wild garden which is the perfect suntrap. For something tasty to eat there’s plenty of restaurants such as Nonna’s Sheffield which serves up delicious Italian dishes in a warm and friendly setting.

COSMO Sheffield

If you’re planning an evening out with friends eating some tasty food and enjoying each others company, COSMO Sheffield is a world food buffet restaurant situated in a fantastic location in the city centre, close to the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. Whilst dining here, you can try 150+ freshly prepared dishes from across the globe.

The Leadmill

For a student night out there is something for everyone, with The Leadmill fulfilling the needs of Indie kids in the city with club nights and gigs from up-and-coming British bands. A range of bars and clubs can be found in Carver Street, with the city itself boasting many pubs and bars that serve for a great crawl through town. The biggest of the student specific nights can be found at the Hallam Union with five different rooms offering music for everyone and cheap drinks.

Kelham Island

Kelham Island is a fantastic neighbourhood in Sheffield which is home to a wide variety of restaurants and bars. This quirky area is an absolute must-visit whilst studying in Sheffield with so drinking and dining spots to make great memories with your friends. Whether it be feasting on a artisan pizza made with fresh dough from Craft & Dough Sheffield, or enjoying a few tipples within the buzzing beer garden at Riverside Kelham. This manmade island is known nowadays for more than just its industrial activity, it’s now a lively nightlife spot for students and locals alike. With so many places to explore, Kelham Island is the perfect destination for students looking to experience the city’s culture and history.

A Sporting Town

If you’re into sport you can find all the usual sporting activities at the universities, from football and rugby, to swimming and tennis, as well as outdoor pursuits linked to the Peak District.

There’s the Sheffield Half Marathon too, considered a major event in the UK’s running calendar and South Yorkshire’s biggest event of its kind. If wall climbing is more your thing, check out The Rab Climbing Works International Festival. With climbers coming from all over the world, you will get to see top-level athletes in a brilliantly intimate setting in The Outdoor City.

Football

The town itself boasts two professional football clubs in Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, so head on down to Bramall Lane or Hillsborough to check out some football on a Saturday afternoon. The city is also home to the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC which you can easily get to from our Sheffield student accommodation.

The Forum

If you’re a fan of independent shops, The Forum on Devonshire Street offers an intriguing mix from independent boutiques offering heritage brands and up-and-coming designer names, to tattoo and hair salons all under one roof. If a new outfit isn’t what you’re after, how about popping in to get a new tattoo or piercing? There’s quite a selection to browse.

Meadowhall Shopping Centre

Not far from the city centre is the Meadowhall Shopping Centre, the largest shopping centre in Yorkshire. With over 290 stores ranging from Zara, Currys, Victoria’s Secret Pink, Game, Apple, Urban Outfitters, Holister and more. No matter what you’re after you are bound to find it here. The good news doesn’t stop there either as Meadowhall offers free parking and is easy to get to using the city trams, so even if you just want to browse it’s easy and cheap to do. Festival Powerhouse

Sheffield boasts a huge variety, from The Sheffield Adventure Film Festival, Get Together Festival celebrating independent music, art, food, and drink, and Weston Park May Fayre bringing kid’s rides, bandstand music, classic cars and artistic shows such as fire breathing!

The Peak District

The Peak District offers the great outdoors right on the doorstep of our student accommodation in Sheffield, with plenty of day trips, walks and hikes available to explore. Within the city itself, Sheffield boasts a number of attractions, including the Grade II listed Sheffield City Hall, which has delivered entertainment since 1932 and with a capacity of around 2,000 offers an intimate chance to see live acts of all persuasions.

The Millennium Gallery

The Millennium Gallery in Sheffield is a popular destination for students, featuring a mix of traditional and modern art, as well as sculpture, prints and installations from around the world. There’s even an interactive 3D virtual tour, which allows visitors to explore the many works of art from a different perspective. The Millennium Gallery has links with London’s V&A and is home to many important artwork and design pieces that portray the industrial heritage and importance of Sheffield.

UK’s Greenest City

Sheffield has been labelled as the UK’s greenest city by NatWest, scoring highly in several categories, including the size of its green spaces, green energy production, and the number of trees per person. From enjoying the peace and quiet of the countryside at Peak District National Park or heading to the unique and historical Norfolk Park for a picnic with friends, there’s an abundance of green spaces to explore whilst studying here.

The student populated areas of Crookes, Sharrow, Ranmoor and Endcliffe also have plenty of greenery so you’ll certainly have a large choice of where to head to unwind on a sunny summers day. In fact, 60% of the city of Sheffield is made up of green spaces for you to explore and enjoy.

The city has also taken a number of steps towards becoming a net-zero carbon city by 2050. This includes the introduction of a carbon-tracking feature so they can better understand their own carbon impact. These factors combined have lead to Sheffield earning the title of UK’s greenest city.
